3 signs it's time for a website update

1) Your website doesn't make your core service offerings and benefits readily available

Perhaps you have a website and it is swimming with a ton of great content, but if that content hasn't been structured in such a way that is intuitive and easy for your user to grasp, you aren't doing yourself any favours. These days, more than ever, people have a short attention span, they are comparison shopping (especially in a competitive market) and they need to know how you can benefit them or alleviate their pain points right away. Unless your core benefits are made clear within 3 seconds of glancing at your site, it is time to think about an update.

Here’s a how-to guide for communicating your value and defining your value proposition.

2 ) Your website doesn't work across all devices. Aka, it isn't mobile-friendly

Ever since mobilegeddon, having a responsive website isn't a nice to have, it is a must. More and more, users are looking for your service offerings on their smartphones while they peruse Netflix or are otherwise preoccupied with other things in life.

This means two things:

  • 1) Your website needs to be mobile-friendly so people can access the information on your website with ease - if they have to pinch and zoom to try and find what they are looking for, they will likely give up and there goes a potential customer.

  • 2) Your website needs to be straightforward, clear, and intuitive to use. People are likely to skim your content, so if you aren't using proper headings, or your headings are mislabeled and unclear, people will likely tire quickly and seek out other websites that are better suited to providing the information they are looking for.

User-friendly design aside, in 2020, if you don't have a mobile-friendly website you are hurting your search rankings. Google will give priority to people with mobile-friendly sites, meaning even if you have a wonderful business and tons of great information or services to share, your competition may nudge you out when it comes to the surface in search results.

3) Your website is dated

Perhaps it has been a few years since you updated your site, or you gave it a try yourself and didn't get very far. It happens. However, if you are looking to attract and engage with potential clients and customers, they need to feel like you are a trusted and competent source in your business area. A key way to do that is to have a modern and professional website.  If you have broken links, horrible stock images, fonts that fight with each other, or a design aesthetic that is dated, it's likely time for an update.
